Title: New Adjustments
Character: DBH: Connor
A/n: This was supposed to come out a lot sooner but I was just not vibing with this for a long time and I restarted it a bunch of times. But I’m mostly satisfied with it now, so enjoy

“Good afternoon, Detective (L/n).”

You recognized Connor’s voice as soon as you heard it, but still you turned your chair around and feigned some surprise in seeing him. “Hello, Connor. You know you can just call me by my first name, especially so late in the evening.”

Connor nodded. “My apologies, I’m still trying to adjust the way I speak to people.”

“It’s not that big of a deal.” You said, giving him a small smile.

It always a little awkward anytime you and the android detective attempted to have a conversation with one another. It had been a good couple of months since the android rally that put the whole city at a standby.

The government was actively trying to find a way to allow androids to coexist peacefully of their own accord. A lot of progress had been given the small amount of time, but there was still a long way to go.

“So,” You began as you leaned back in your chair. “How was the case?”

Connor straightened his tie. “I’m still getting used to working on cases involving more human culprits instead of trying to catch deviants. But given the recent change, it’s pretty nice.”

You looked up at him and smiled. “I’m glad to see you adapting to it well.” Your gaze was caught by the small curl in Connor’s hair that always seemed to be hanging in front of his face.

“Your hair’s a little messy, Connor.” You said, tapping your finger against your own head where his hair was falling out of place.

He brought up his hand to fix it, but missed it entirely. “Did I get it?”

You couldn’t help but laugh as you shook your head. “I can get it,” You sat up straight. “Lean foward a little.”

You had to stiffle another laugh as he awkwardly shifted himself so the upper half of his body was closer to you.

“I see we still to work on your gracefulness,” You mused, taking your hand and brushing back the hair so it was neatly back in place. “That should do for now.”

Connor smiled. “Thank you, (Y/n).”

You lowered your hand from his hair and nodded. “You’re hair feels weird.”

His brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”

“I can’t really pinpoint it. It’s super soft, but it’s like something’s off.”

Connor straightened himself out again, and instead pulled a chair over to sit beside you. “Well android hair is synthetic, perhaps that’s why it feels strange. We can also change our hair colors on command.”

You gave him a puzzled expression. “Can you really?”

“I always forget you never had a house droid like most did,” Connor tilted his head slightly and smiled. “Do you wanna see?”

“Yes, please!”

Connor grinned. “What color should I change it too?”

You hummed, looking at him closely as you went through a variation of colors. “Try red.”

You waited for him to move, but all the changed was the color on his LED. Slowly, his dark brown hair turned into a bright ginger color.

Connor felt himself get a little embarrassed when you stiffled your laugh with the sleeve of your sweater. “Does it look bad?”

You smiled and waited until you were confident you could get through a sentence without laughing. “I think your brown hair suits you much better.”

You reached into your bag and took out a small hand mirror to look at himself in. The look on his face was priceless.

Connor even laughed at his own reflection. “I think you’re right.”

The two of your shared a look before you broke out into laughter, Connor looking on with a smile.

You were very easily his favorite human.

Hank was like a father to him, but even now, he still had something smart to say to him every once and awhile. But even when you first met him, you were nothing but kind. You’d always chime in when Gavin having one of his moments with Connor and when Hank got especially angry with him after they first met. You were right there to calm everyone down.

Connor wanted to talk to you like this all the time. When it was simple silly stuf, it was easy to talk to you.

But he was still learning to adapt with his emotions, seeing as it took him so long to admit that he was deviant in the first place.

This, however, was nice.

The two of you talking and enjoying each other’s company.

Connor had been meaning to ask if you’d like to do something with him after work. Even Hank had been getting on his case of actually getting to asking you.

And he about to do just that, but Hank came grumbling into the office and stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Connor.

“What the ever loving fuck did you do to your hair, Connor?”

The sent you cackling, and Connor in a small state of shock when he realized he never changed his hair back to normal.

Hank rubbed at his nose. “You know what nevermind, I don’t care. I need to speak to you pronto.”

Connor turned to you and his hair slowly shifted back to it’s normal brunette color.

“Much better,” You commented, turning your chair back to face your desk. “Better get a move on if you don’t want Hank to get really cranky.”

He nodded. “You’re right,” He was hesitant to get up from his chair and leave, but Hank wasn’t someone to keep waiting. “It was nice talking to you.”

You beamed at him. “It’s always a pleasure, we should do it more often.”

Connor found himself at a loss for words and simply nodded before following after Hank.

Wow, that was pathetic.” Hank commented once Connor approached him.

They were alone in the small kitchen area, Hank was stirring a mix of cream and most definitely alcohol into his coffee.

“I don’t understand.”

“(Y/n) gave you a clear shot to ask them out and you still couldn’t do it.” Hank said with an unimpressed glance as he sipped his coffee.

“I didn’t know what to say, these sort of things have to be planned don’t they?”

“If you keep waiting for the right thing to say to (Y/n), then you’re never gonna say anything. It’s a simple question, and I’m tired of you two gawking at each other from across the room.”

Connor looked over at him. “We do that?”

“Jesus christ,” Hank mumbled into his drink. “Will you shut the hell up and just ask ‘em out all ready?”

“You think I can?”

“If you’re gonna make up your mind, I’d do it soon. It looks like (Y/n)’s about to leave.”

Connor whirled around and saw you putting on your coat and picking up your bag. Before he even registered it, he was rushing towards you.

“(Y/n)! Can I talk to you before you go?”

You tilted your head at him, but nodded nonetheless. “Of course, is something wrong?”

“Hm? Oh no, nothing’s wrong. I just needed to ask you something,” He paused, but faltered slightly when he realized you were waiting for him to continue. “I’m not good at this sort of thing. Especially when it comes to you, my words are clumsy and I always end up saying the wrong things. But I’m still new to this, so I’m sorry if things don’t come out the way I intend them to-“

Connor was interrupted when you placed both of your hands on his shoulders. “I know androids technically can’t do this. But I need you to take a breath and slow down for me.”

He blinked and slowly nodded, finding his composure again. “I’m sorry, I just think too much sometimes.”

“I don’t mind,” You slid your hands off of him. “You know you can tell me anything, we were talking just fine a moment ago.”

Connor nodded again, you wouldn’t make fun of him, even if you didn’t feel the same. “Would you like to hang out after work sometime, just the two of us?”

You couldn’t help but laugh. “Was that it?” Connor only responded with a short nod. “I’d like that.”

“Really? That’s great!”
