A light flickers against his eyelids, not sparking, but faint, like the first hint of sunrise. Shiro stills against him, breath drawing in surprise. Keith’s eyes shoot open because—there’s light in the water.

For a moment, he thinks his mind is gone. This, at last—this is the final thing that breaks him, and none of it has been real. A handful of blue spots glow and dance in the waves closest to him, flickering and changing. It’s impossible and beautiful.

“That’s what I wanted you to see,” Shiro says against his temple, rough as stone, reaching out to drag his long-clawed fingers through the water, making a thousand new lights appear in his wake. “This.”

It doesn’t really matter what happens in the future, or if you can win your next match. The joy you feel beating the guy in front of you, and when you’re able to pull out 120% of your potential, is everything.

Hi! I really love your writing, and I want to get into writing for characters that aren’t my ocs. Do you have any tips/recommendations for writing about characters that aren’t ones you came up with? (ex. writing for fire emblem characters, mysme characters, etc.) Thanks in advance!

Aaa, I apologize for the late response on this! So based on your question, I’m assuming you’re looking for tips when it comes to characterization in fanfiction. In that case, here’s what I usually keep in mind when writing fanfiction:

  • Consider the character’s voice. How do they usually speak? Are they friendly, aggressive, polite…? I base a lot of a character’s personality based on the way they speak and their choice of words. Although subtle at times, the way a character speaks to certain other characters can differ. (For example, with Alfonse from FE, the way he talks with Fjorm is a bit more formal and short as opposed to when he talks with Sharena which is a bit more relaxed).
  • Consider the situation you’re writing the character in and see if you can get information on said character’s reaction by comparing the written situation to a similar situation in canon or that has elements of it. For example, if you’re writing a scene where the character is comforting someone because of self-esteem issues, was there a situation in canon that dealt with self-esteem? How did they feel and react to it? Consider the character’s feelings at that time, their feelings at the current time of the scene, their relationship with the other character, and their overall personality to get an idea for their reaction.

Those are the only points I can think of, really. Everything else depends on your own writing style and what you want to focus on in terms of characterization/what you’re writing. I hope this was able to be of some help, and good luck!

Squish! That! Cat!

I considered myself to be well versed on cats/communicating with cats. I’ve lived with at least two cats my whole life, and currently live with two very different cats who I love. Apparently most cats are shoulder cats? My cat Mason has always been very nervous about going up on people’s shoulders, so I thought I’d try the “shoulder cat” technique.

I had to help him up on my shoulders because he’s never done it himself before. But once I got him up there I squished him, he started purring like nobody’s business. I carried him around our entire apartment, up and down staircases, and he was so happy. He didn’t try to leave once! When I put him down he head butted me and meowed and was super affectionate. And of course I gave him a treat.

TLDR- Even if you live with cats and think you understand cats, please watch this video.
